Vancouver is not one plumbing market. It is a pre-war core wrapped in three decades of suburban build-out, sitting on top of a protected drinking water aquifer, split between two permitting counters and two sewer authorities. These four neighborhoods carry almost all of Vancouver’s old plumbing. Hough holds the largest surviving collection of pre-WWII housing in the city, built primarily between about 1890 and 1945, and a large block of it roughly bounded by Kauffman, Broadway, 15th and Fourth Plain went onto the Washington Heritage Register in 2003. Arnada is one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city. On houses of that era the likely combination is galvanized steel supply, cast iron drain stacks and clay tile laterals. None of that is a diagnosis of any particular address, so we camera the lateral and flow-test the supply before recommending anything.
About 51 percent of Vancouver housing was built between 1970 and 1999. That single band explains most of the service calls we take here. Addresses on the edge of the city are the ones that catch people out, because a parcel can sit in a Vancouver mailing address and still be permitted by the county.
