Most towns in Washington County grew steadily. Hillsboro did not. It was an agricultural market town from the 1840s until the mid 1990s, then built almost continuously for twenty-five years. The result is a city where the plumbing under one address is a century older than the plumbing under another, and where a technician who assumes either one is walking into the wrong job. Here is what is actually down there, district by district.
The Hillsboro downtown historic district covers eighty-seven significant sites and holds housing from the late 1800s and early 1900s. Cast iron does not usually collapse without warning, but the interior wall roughens, the working diameter narrows, and joints separate as the building settles around them.
